Ear Infections - The Homeopathic Treatment
Dr Francesca Swainston, homeopathic doctor, author and well-known pioneer of natural medicine talks about ear infections, a common problem that often becomes the precursor of serious chronic ill-health due to medical mismanagament.
A build-up in the eustachian tube of the resultant fluid from inflammation that doesn't drain causes pain in the ear, and when this fluid becomes further infected a more serious condition develops. The conventional treatment with antibiotics is palliative at best and causes profound disturbances in the gut microflora that negatively impacts the whole health of the patient. Antibiotics are even administered to infants, and the resultant destruction of their vulnerable gut microflora causes a susceptibility to disease due to their compromised immune system from the loss of their protective gut bacteria.
There are numerous causes of ear infections such as colds and flu, allergies, sinus congestion, swollen glands and more. The standard treatment with antibiotics is short-sighted and causes more damage than repair if prescribed when not absolutely necessary. Homeopathic treatment can alleviate pain rapidly when the correct remedy is prescribed, and due to the healing effect of constitutional strengthening and repair, the underlying cause of the ear infection is also cured.
Aconite: Acute ear pain. Pain comes on suddenly and is intense. Can be due to exposure to cold wind or draughts, or very hot weather. The first remedy to be given at the beginning of an inflammation. Ailments from fear with restlessness. Can have colic and diarrhea or fever.
Belladonna: Acute ear pain. Otitis media with intense pain, flushed red face and fever. Throbbing pain deep in ear. Moaning with each breath from pain. Can grind their teeth during sleep. No anxiety or fear but can become delirious with pain with visions of bugs crawling on their bed.
Calcarea carbonicum: Recurring ear infections with tonsil problems. Tendency to be overweight with increased perspiration on the head. Can be due to exhaustion, and feeling of inability to work as they are overburdened with the workload. Water in ear or swimmer's ear. Feeling in ear as though something pressing out. Can have pus discharge from ear. Tendency to nightmares or fear of the dark.
Causticum: Chronic middle-ear catarrh with an accumulation of ear wax. Can have tinnitus or re-echoing of words and steps. Restless legs at night. Ailments from long-lasting worry or grief. Pathologically sympathetic.
Ferrum phos: Acute ear pain. In acute inflammation it is the remedy for inflammation before exudation is established. Acute otitis media when Belladonna fails. Anaemic. May also have bronchitis or is prone to develop chest problems. May have a history of nosebleeds.
Graphites: Dryness of inner ear with discharge behind ear of honey-like fluid. A white scaly membrane can be covering eardrum. Can experience the sound of a detonation in the ear like a gunshot or a hissing sound.Tends to have unhealthy skin in general with suppuration. Fidgety while sitting at work or school and tends to be teasing and disobedient. Can be due to mental overwork. Can have a tendency to be overweight.
Kali muriaticum: Chronic catarrhal conditions of the middle ear with a lot of discharge that can be seen in the outer ear. Tendency to thrush. Glands around the ear are swollen. Follows Belladonna well.
Mercurius: Thick yellow discharge from the ear which can be blood-streaked. Boils in the auditory canal. Increase in saliva that can dribble out during sleep. Swollen and infected tonsils. Very bad odour from the mouth. Sweaty hands.
Pulsatilla: Catarrhal ear infection with thickish bland yellow discharge. Has a tendency to eye problems such as styes or pink eye. Generally tearful, can cry over very little and likes comforting, sympathy and hugs. Can be due to iron tonics or due to unresolved or mismanaged childhood illnesses. Likes to have hands above head and feet up on coffee table or chair.
Silica: Chronic ear infections when suppuration has established. Helpful in draining accumulated substances from the ear. Abscess. Swollen glands. Itching nose. Patient is thin and sensitive to draughts. A shy and under-confident person that is particular about specifics.
In acutes give 30C potency every 15 minutes for 1 hour, if no improvement, change the remedy. When improvement is experienced, then give the remedy three times daily for two days. The problem should be cleared by then. If there is a relapse, change the remedy, and give once. Wait for 3 hours, if there is improvement, then give three times during 24 hours. The pain in an acute ear infection should improve within the first hour of giving the remedy. If there is no improvement, get to the doctor or pharmacy for treatment, and give homeopathic treatment while all of this is taking place.
In chronic ear infections, give the remedy in 30C potency once hourly for 3 hours, then twice daily. There should be an improvement in the general well-being of the patient after the first day. The ear will take time to heal, but the pain, discomfort and mood of the patient should be noticeably better after the first two days. If there is no improvement, change the remedy and repeat from the beginning.
If 30c potency of the indicated remedy is not available, give the potency on hand.
There is often a concomitant parasitic infection in people that develop ear infections. Give an anti-parasitic as part of the treatment to allow the body to utilize its immunity in repairing the body rather than fighting foreign invaders.
Also, have the ear looked at because sometimes there is an accumulation of matter that cannot be dislodged in the ear canal which will interfere with hearing if not physically removed. In this case the ear canal should be professionally washed.
