Psoriasis - The Homeopathic Treatment

Dr Francesca Swainston, homeopathic doctor, author and well-known pioneer of natural medicine talks about psoriasis, a terrifying creeping skin condition that can progress into a reptilian purplish tarpaulin body cover that has no conventional treatment other than suppression of the body's own  mechanisms such as cell growth and inflammation.

There is often a thyroid component in the development of psoriais, so it is important to ensure there is enough iodine in the diet. A supplementation of kelp (not iodine isolates, the whole plant), is useful, also selenium and zinc. Tuna is the richest source of dietary selenium or tofu and sunflower seeds for vegans although tuna provides 223%, tofu 36% and sunflower seeds 34%. Beef, lentils and chickpeas are the richest dietary source of zinc.

In addition to the following remedies, it is important to use topical treatment. The area should be cleaned twice daily with an undiluted tincture of calendula and hypericum. Then apply extra virgin olive oil to protect the skin, provide therapeutic vitamin E and also prevent cracking. If the area appears red and feels hot, then an application of lettuce (butter variety) leaves can be applied to soothe the area. If there is any exudation or infection, apply a cream made from petroleum jelly with calendula, hypericum and echinacea.

As improvement takes place, acute conditions can arise, for which the acute remedy needs to be given. After the acute condition subsides re-look at the whole symptom picture and prescribe accordingly.

As the patient progresses during treatment the focus of the weakness may shift and so the remedy needs to be adapted to follow the shift. The key to selecting the correct remedy are the mental and emotional or unusual symptoms.

There is faster resolution and improvement in health when the remedy is changed to match the developmental symptoms of self-healing in the patient.

Give Thyroidinum 30c once a month as an intercurrent.
